I've also started on the Imp commission, working on him after sealing Raakid and waiting for him to dry - which in the heat we've had I've been able to work on him again within an hour or two! Still lots more to do on Raakid of course but continuing to work on the dapples and his mane and tail right now.

I will post more photos once I've made enough progress to make it worthwhile, until then nose back to the grindstone for me! :)
I have a few weeks off work and I'm making the most of my time pushing ahead with commissions.

I thought I would share with you very early progress photos of the next piece I'm working on, which will be my last traditional commission for quite some time.

I started this guy a few months ago but had to put him aside because I wasn't entirely sure how I was going to cope with him - he is SO heavy! There was no way I could paint him using my traditional method of 'hair by hair'. So after some thought and testing I have achieved this look so far by using just pastels and a tiny applicator, no paint or brush! It looks nicer in person and I think the technique will work out well in the end with the random graininess caused by this technique lending itself nicely to the overall appearance of a dapple grey.

There is a long, long way to go so please totally ignore the head, legs, mane and tail - I'm really only working on the dapples at this stage, trying to get the shape and intensity just how I want them. There is a learning curve but I'm looking forward to mastering and further developing this new technique!

I'm also going to throw in some photos I've taken of Tayla bike riding recently, I love the ever changing weather this time of year and the fabulous colours nature brings with it! I'm actually really enjoying taking photos of something other than model horses - Uh including my car! :)
Had to quickly share these photos :) I wish I could keep the black appy though, I'm going to be sad when I have to send him off.

I can't believe my last post was early October! I've had a couple of hectic months, with Tayla doing her final exams at high school, her 18th birthday just last week and me needing to get stuck into my commissions now that the warm weather is upon us. So I decided to put myself into internet exile so I could get through as much as possible!

Tayla also found an interest in dirt bike riding. She dived in head first, she just loves it! After riding a friends bike just once, she knew she wanted to do this on an ongoing basis! So she bought a bike, a Kawasaki 250 and then of course needed a vehicle to get the dirt bike out to the tracks! So she bought this ute just last week. Oh notice she put her hair back to it's natural colour for her 18th :)

The photos below of her jumping the bike were taken about four weeks ago, this was the first weekend she rode her new bike - she has no fear this girl! A guy at the track asked me "How long has she been riding?" I replied "Oh in total she has probably been on a bike for one hour" He replied, "No I don't mean today, I mean how many years has she been riding" I said "Yeah, about an hour!" LOL

Well two appaloosas in tandem. It was interesting to work on one light on dark and the other dark on light and the different technique needed for each. Both pieces have been based on real horses of similar type. I managed to finish Toot Sweet last weekend, she is such a cute little resin sculpted by Adalee Hude.
This is the second BBT I have painted and he has been just as much fun as the first and I cannot wait to paint a third! This is the first black I have ever painted and was a little nervous about it, he has warm undertones, his lower legs have a stronger bronze tone to them because the reference photo does. He is still a work in progress, more work to be done to his mane, tail, eyes, hooves and just a little more detail to his roaning. Again, his colour is based on reference photos I found on the internet of a draft horse.
So I plan to keep trying to focus as much time as possible on my finish work, which will of course impact on my free time I have to spend on the internet and seeing to emails. I still have so many emails to catch up on so please forgive me if I am yet to reply to your email. I've been trying to work through one or two emails while at lunch at work this past week to try and start to get through the back log - replying to emails when I get home from work is the last thing I feel like doing at the moment while trying to juggle so much. Hope all is well in your neck of the woods! :)Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16229542496488037364noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1102051937069754747.post-74633439227792243992011-10-09T12:01:00.000+10:302011-10-09T12:01:11.466+10:30Current work in progressI've been working on this little lady for three weeks so far. It has been a bit of a battle to guide her towards the base shade I was looking for. I started out with a cold white, knowing that usually the white warms up and can have a tendency to become too yellow! But she remained a cool shade of white up until yesterday, so I was becoming concerned that she was going to end up too cold a shade of white! But I have just sealed her and I can see she is starting to turn - now I have to be careful she doesn't swing too much towards a yellow white!

This is a commission piece, Toot Sweet sculpted by Adalee Hude. I'm working from reference photos and staying pretty true to them.

First photo was taken just over a week ago you can see she is quite a cold white. Close-up taken today, I've had to reduce the brightness on the close-up photo otherwise the detail is washed out, even doing so there is more detail than the photo shows....
I'm really at a loss for words but had to share photos of this beautiful boy here. I am absolutely thrilled and feel so honoured to have THE stunning Marshall in my collection - sculpted and custom glazed by Lynn Fraley of Laf 'n Bear.

The photos are not very good, I'll try to take better ones and update them. I have named him Major Marshall because he is without a doubt a major piece in my collection! His detailing is incredible, from the subtle shift of shades in his coat, awesomely 'scritched' sabino markings and right down to what appears to be tiny eyelashes on his beautiful eyelids and his eyes resemble soft, dark liquid pools - wow I so love him! Thank you Lynn for bringing so much beauty and joy into my home!

I longed to add Marshall to my collection, thought my chances of ever doing so would be slim. This particular boy was always a favourite, never dared to dream he would come and live with me. Yet here he is. *adoring sigh* A big thank you to his previous owner for agreeing to sell him to me. :)
I hope this doesn't sound conceited, but the fact that this is the commission slot I auctioned with 100% of the proceeds going towards Melly's Flying Heart Fundraiser and how easily her 'coat' has come together, I've never experienced this! - why this piece? There must be something else at play here?... something to ponder anyway :)

Almost immediately, Vixen loved where her colour was going and so did I! She isn't finished yet of course but thought I'd share some work in progress photos of this awesome little resin. She can really work any colour!
I think I'm nervous about sending her to the U.S. and then deciding when looking at the photos with a fresh eye that I don't like them! But I've got so many photos now, too many choices, I'm now totally confused which way to go argh!!!

I have narrowed it down to these three and swaying towards the middle one. The grey is still too busy for me even when I blur it. I have also included the larger versions of all three so you can see the background a bit easier. Anyone have any thoughts or preferences? I could do with some input from others to help sway me I think!
The lighter backgrounds seem to show her colour more correctly, she isn't as bright a bay as she appears in the blue/black background photos.
I'm going to enjoy her for a week or so, take some final photos of her for the auction and then I'm going to send her to my good friend in the U.S. ready for her auction in September! I've decided to send her to the U.S. before the auction as 90% of the models I finish reside in the U.S. it's a pretty good bet that is where Victrix will live also :) I have no name ideas for her so I guess her new owner will have that honour!

I hope you like how she turned out - any areas that appear coarse in the execution (such as the white hairs on her face or extreme shading are just due to the larger than life photos. In person she really is super softly detailed and shaded and in my opinion she is nicer in person, the photos don't really do her justice unfortunately.

Also at auction right now is a commission slot opportunity with 100% of the proceeds being donated to cancer research. This will be the last commission slot offered by me until the next benefit auction which will be held this time next year. So if you have been waiting for a commission slot, here is your chance! :)

If the link below doesn't work just go to http://myauctionbarn.com/ and you will see a link to the auction from there.
All my programs were so old they were no longer compatible with Windows 7 so I also had to buy lots of new software including a new version of Paint Shop Pro and now I have to learn how to use it all over again! Just her eyes to finalise and I'm considering adding more grey into her tail, what do you think? Unlike Stormy the photos don't do her justice, she is much nicer in person, I'm really quite excited about her and really looking forward to her finding a new home and hearing what her 'Mom' thinks of her once they see her in person! Auction coming in September!
It almost feels like a miracle to me, to see her like this, a picture of health, looking so beautiful with her whole life ahead of her. I feel so blessed and proud of the young lady she has grown into - so I'd like to share photos of my 'little girl', grown up :)

I must apologise for my sudden vacation from the internets! I have been working insane hours for a number of months now and Tayla has been even busier juggling her school and UMAT study, work, preparing for her formal and her Young Ambassador role with MAW. But we are anticipating that things will settle down for us both in August.

I knew this time of the year was going to be hectic but I didn't bank on also buying a new car AND enjoying driving it so much that it took up any spare moment I had - when not consumed by work or family commitments! I suddenly came to realise just how much of my spare time I had been committing to painting horses, I wasn't allowing myself to do anything else! So for the first time in what must be at least 18 months I decided that painting was no longer going to be my main priority when I had some free time. I must admit I felt like a naughty child when I was off pursuing other enjoyable activities rather than painting, especially as I now have a number of commissions!

I always said, after my tack making burn out, that I would never paint unless I felt like doing so, I enjoy it so much I don't want to lose that passion. But I hadn't quite realised, until spending some time away from painting, how all consumed by it I had unknowingly become. So I have decided to continue on that vein and only paint when I'm in the mood, (which is really always) but I'm going to also allow myself to make other plans during my spare time, go out and enjoy myself from time to time and try not to feel guilty about doing so either, (although I still have to work on that!). This will impact on my four outstanding commissions to some degree but only in that I won't be turning them around as quickly as I had initially hoped. I envisage having them completed in the next 6 -12 months hopefully. That will then be the last of the commissions for the foreseeable future, with the exception of the annual cancer research donation slot of course, I hope to continue that for as long as I am able to paint.

I have still been working on Victrix though so thought it was time I popped in here explained my hiatus and share some updated photos of her. She is coming along nicely and will be offered for auction in the near future, perhaps a month or two? Depends on how much time I spend on her, I don't want to rush things ;)

So I suspect I will continue to have a low online presence for the next few weeks at least but I shall try not to make it quite so long between posts next time :) Take care all!

This year we have a five day break over Easter. Tayla has been using this time for study so I have been able to spend a large amount of time working on Victrix - we have both been rather productive!

I still have quite a few layers to do on the nearside before I have caught up with the offside and still some modification of the appy blanket before I'm totally happy with it. I have one more day left of this Easter break so I hope to make good progress over the next 24 hours. Hopefully by the second weekend in May I'll be ready to make a start on the refining part of the process, I'm really looking forward to that!

Stay tuned for more updates, she is coming together quicker than I anticipated!Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16229542496488037364noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1102051937069754747.post-58390557237918458672011-04-17T15:28:00.003+09:302011-04-17T17:34:07.426+09:30The 'not' a weekend progress report! :)Well as anticipated I don't have any progress photos to show you except for this shot, which my pesky daughter snapped of me during the evening this week! (excuse my bedraggled hair!)

I am working away on her offside and it is coming along nicely, I hope to have something worthwhile to share within a week or two.
I was thrilled to have been asked to paint these two beautiful Fraley pieces and true to form with my previous experience with this person, once I accepted the commissions the boys were in the mail and here with me within a couple of weeks! So with some fine weather this past week I have been able to get most of the prep work completed on the Raakid - wow is he a heavy, large but beautiful resin! I just need to go over him once more and then give him a final white primer coat. Then I will be able to begin work on him during the winter along with Victrix.

My plan is to finish getting the base pattern down on Victrix first and then I can enjoy applying her fine detail work in-between getting the base colour down on Raakid. By which time it will hopefully be spring and then I can prep Backbeat Thunder and the other two commission pieces. Once Victrix and Raakid are painted I will then start painting BBT and then the rest of the commissions will follow in order of arrival, (there will also be a commission slot auctioned in August to benefit cancer research for anyone looking for a slot with me). So I think I have enough now to keep me busy well into 2012!Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16229542496488037364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1102051937069754747.post-1278068644682970082011-04-10T19:56:00.002+09:302011-04-10T20:03:16.982+09:30Weekend progress report #3

Not much to report, will let the photos do the talking. Still plugging away, I enjoy this stage but I'm going to have to pull myself away and get started on the other side! Still lots more to do on this side but it will have to wait until I get the basic appy pattern down on the otherside, doh!

I may not post again for some time while I'm working on the near side - unless I get tempted to do more work on this side!
I just wanted to say a few words recommending Mark and Vanessa of Horsing Around as I recently received my second custom glaze piece and he really is quite stunning!

The service and value for money that HA offers is second to none! When ordering a custom glazed piece, (I have two more in the making!) I have been dealing with Vanessa at HA and have found her to be extremely patient and meticulous, being sure that every detail is considered when ordering your special custom glazed piece! Check out their website (link above) for the beautiful range of chinas available in original finish, custom glaze, white glazed or bisque versions and all at very reasonable prices!

Well I have been working on Victrix a little each night during this week and over the weekend. This stage is slow going! but I'm motivated at the moment to keep progressing with her - until I hit a brick wall!

I have been mainly working on details and layers but I'm still not quite happy with the balance of the elements of the pattern. I can't move on to her neck and belly though until I'm happy with the layout of the pattern on her hindquarters and barrel! So you can see some progression here but not a lot, unfortunately. Hopefully next weekend will see me moving on to the neck!

This is where I am at with her after two, at least 10 hour days working on her this weekend. I did start on her markings a couple of weeks ago but have not been happy with it and not made much progress until this weekend!

I think I will take an updated photo each Sunday - Uh unless I get really nervous about a particular stage and I'm having trouble trying to get things to work out in which case you won't hear from me! I have only just started laying in the roaning up to her shoulder, still loads of layers to go yet, Close-up she is still very rough and rather ugly and her other side she is a purebred bay TB still :)

See you next weekend!Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16229542496488037364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1102051937069754747.post-30555590152526052962011-03-26T11:55:00.004+10:302011-03-26T11:59:34.042+10:30My winter project....Autumn has arrived sadly so no more prepping/pastelling for me - Unless we have some nice, warmer weather during winter! But the cold, damp, dreary months ahead will be perfect weather for working in acrylics!
I have now begun, working on, what is going to be a very long process of painting her appy coat! I suspect she will take me the entire winter to complete. If all goes well and I don't mess her up, she will be offered for sale, in the last quarter of the year.
In the mean time if I seem to be a little quiet with my online presence you have some idea of what I will be getting up to! ;)
I feel inspired to push myself, to do each sculpted detail justice. If the sculpting artist takes the time to sculpt it, I feel compelled and inspired to take the time to paint it, even accentuate it. And so I 'try' to match that level of detail in my finishwork (which can be a little difficult at times controlling that cloud of dust with pastels). And so it was with Lynn Fraley's Backbeat Thunder. When you look at these photos, look beneath the pastels and paint, look at the sculpting, which can be more easily seen and appreciated now he is painted - wow is all I can say...
For me, their pieces capture the essence of the horse. A moment frozen in time that I, more often than not, can relate to. Their pieces stir long forgotten memories of times I spent with horses many years ago. They have a certain spirit and beauty about them, and of course the level and quality of detail that these Ladies incorporate into their sculptures that I adore. Detail so superbly sculpted into the piece that you know it was a long time in the planning, it belongs, and always was going to be a part of the piece. The detail is smooth enough to enable the finishwork artist to easily paint and follow the lines but not so smooth as to become somewhat sterile. I particularly love how these Ladies manage to sculpt the characteristics of 'skin', the way it wrinkles and stretches for example - ah just thinking about it makes me want to paint again! - I'm looking forward to when my new Fraley resins arrive!
She was stationary waiting for her turn to enter an intersection. When a car approached her from behind the driver took his eyes off the road and didn't notice she had stopped and rear ended her - with such force that he pushed her forward into the car in front of her. She had the presence of mind that, although she had her foot on the brake she was still being pushed forward and pulled on her handbrake to try and stop herself from hitting the car in front - all to no avail of course.

Apart from a slightly sore back the first couple of days, Tayla fortunately isn't hurt. We do all the things required, police report, contact insurer, make appoint with crash repairer etc. go see repairer, he gives an initial estimate of $4,600 damage (car is insured for $10,000) so Tayla is feeling better about the fact that soon her car will be repaired and all will be back to normal. So we have to wait until the following week for the insurance assessor to inspect the car.

The week leading up to this and this past week I have been working 12 hour shifts to save a little extra money so I could buy a Du Boulay piece I have wanted for quite a few years so I'm getting somewhat excited about that prospect and also being able to buy a couple of Lynn Fraley sold out resins I really wanted! But....

Fast-forward to the insurance assessor - he inspects the car and with the new repair quote of $7,500 now decides the car is a write off, cannot be driven and is no longer covered by insurance! So visualise here Tayla's world plummeting into the abyss as only a, somewhat histrionic teenager can do. But as her mum it's been heartbreaking to watch just how sad she has been mourning the loss of her much loved car. But this is something I can't fix, I can't put it all back together! And now suddenly Tayla has no car to drive!

The first car of choice was the new Suzuki Swift but at $20,000 that wasn't going to be an option as a first car. Plus she only had X amount of dollars saved. So her next choice was this - And here she is with her first car. I asked them to cover it in balloons and things as she couldn't drive it yet (too young only 15) and wanted to make it more fun for her, you can just see her inside the car fighting with the balloons! LOL This was an awesome little car that had traveled just 36,000kms previously owned by a teacher . She paid $8,500 for it and as a surprise I had the alloy wheels, lower profile tyres, tinted windows, rear spoiler and yes even the 'Billabong' sticker put on for her.

As for me, there goes all my plans for the week! I have never experienced this before, the time and stress involved in having to organise everything! Taking time off work to look for cars, test drive, find a company that will insure it etc. - That was a days drama in itself that I just can't be bothered to go into here except to say be careful buying a sports version of a car that is factory fitted with a body kit because you know, even a 1.5 litre engine with a body kit goes much faster when a 17 year old is driving it! *rolls eyes* Ok so very quickly this particular insurance company first said they would insure the car if I would guarantee the 17 year old wouldn't drive it! Well yeah because that really suits the purpose of buying the car! Then they said ok she can drive it three days a week and it will cost me $3,600 a year for the pleasure! Argh!!!

So I have been feeling emotionally drained, physically exhausted and a little sorry for myself too but I'm feeling a little better having typed this out so perhaps I will cut the long story shorter:

Tayla's old car is still here, hopefully they will pick it up next week. She has her new car but isn't enjoying it yet, still mourning her old car and feeling guilty any time she feels a little happy or excited about her new car. I have been really worried about how sad she has been, I wanted to do whatever I could to try and make up for this loss that, and lets remember the poor kid did nothing wrong yet had her car taken away from her, a car that she saved for two years to buy. :(

So she ended up buying her dream Suzuki swift, a limited edition RE.3 pearlized white 2008 model that has traveled just 29,000kms. Although she had to add all her savings (another $2000) and there was still a shortfall that I made up - so no more china purchases for me for a while! But all this doesn't matter really in the big scheme of things. I know Tayla is sad about her old car and I am exhausted by all the running around I have had to do and worrying about Tayla, my lost work time that I will need to try and make up this weekend and additional financial outlay for us both - BUT the outcome could have been a lot worse, I thank God no one was 'physically' hurt.

And to think all of this stress, sadness and upheaval all because some guy took his eyes off the road for just a second!Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16229542496488037364noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1102051937069754747.post-30101432971988565032011-03-08T23:18:00.001+10:302011-03-08T23:23:12.878+10:30My roaning techniqueI have taken this from a post that I made on Blab it may be of help to some...

The method I use for roaning is better shown with one very large photo rather than a video and/or progress photos. This is a close-up photo of Brigitte Eberl's Rosita.

Here in this photo, (click for larger image) you can clearly see all the tiny brush strokes, that is all it takes to build this effect, no special technique or skill at all just a lot of time, patience and tiny brush strokes, anyone can do it!

The entire model, even her face was basically painted using a 20/0 or 5/0 brush. Countless layers, thousands of brushstrokes, a myriad of colours and shades from white to violet and every grey, umber and black shade in-between AND a few months of work.

If you decide to try this method my only other advice I can give is to accept it will take a lot of time and patience. There are no shortcuts with this technique the key is simply lots and lots of layers so just settle back, relax, take your time and have fun!
